Newcomer Orientation Week Program/Welcome Information for Newcomers Program

Newcomer Orientation Week Program

This week-long program offers high school students (grades 9-12) an orientation to their school before the start of the new school year. Held at four school hubs each August, the program prepares newcomer high school students for the upcoming academic year. Participants are introduced to daily routines, supportive networks, and resources to help them understand the credit system, available courses, and various school supports. The program is peer-led, with older students providing guidance and support to newcomers both during the program and throughout the school year.

Welcome Information to Newcomers Program

This one-day orientation, held just before the start of the school year, is designed for children entering grades 7 and 8 who are newcomers to Canada and have been here for less than a year. The program helps these youth prepare for middle school by emphasizing the importance of structured daily routines in learning. It features activities that promote community engagement and leadership skills. Throughout the day, students have the opportunity to meet their peers, participate in a ‘graduation’ ceremony, and receive guidance from older students. The program has a strong peer-led component, with older students sharing their middle school experiences to make the transition smoother. Mentoring continues throughout the school year, providing ongoing support.
